Raptors vs. Heat (Game 5) Eastern Conference Semi's 2015-2016

The Toronto Raptors are currently tied 2-2 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals with the Miami Heat. The Raptors will square off with the Heat in the Air Canada Center tonight 8 PM ET.

After dropping a critical game 1 in overtime, the Raptors stormed back to beat the heat  in games 2 (96-92) and 3 (95-91), before succumbing to another overtime meltdown in game 4 (94-87).

We have learned a great deal from the first 4 games:

  • equally matched teams and a propensity for overtime
  • struggling Raptors back court (DeRozan and Lowry)
  • veteran play of Dwyane Wade in crunch time
  • importance of bigs (Jonas Valančiūnas and Hassan Whiteside) to their respective teams
Game 5 Prediction:

Although the momentum is in favor of the Heat, the Raptors are playing at home in front of a hungry fan base that has never seen the conference finals.  With only two games away and home court advantage regained, the Raptors are poised to make history.

The only hurdle: Demar DeRozan / Kyle Lowry

Derozan is averaging 17.7 points on 33% shooting. His back court teammate, Lowry, is averaging 15 points on 33% shooting. In the playoffs, Miami's Dwyane Wade is averaging 22 points on 48% shooting.

The all-star back court of DeRozan and Lowry have to show up for game 5 if the Raptors want a chance at advancing to the conference finals.

Low-carb is the best approach for health

If you want to lose weight and feel healthy, I highly recommend you adopt a low-carb approach to nutrition. Eating a diet low in carbohydrates helps to regulate your blood sugar and improve your bodies natural insulin response. Low-carb nutrition can be a very delicious and appetizing lifestyle.

You don't need to be a chef to make delicious low-carb meals. With a busy lifestyle, no one has time to slave in a kitchen. That is why it's important to me that all of my low-carb meals be prepared in less than 1 hr. with minimal effort. In fact, most of these meals require less than 20 min. of preparation.

Chicken breast,fried-spinach, and home-made garlic sauce.
In addition to the convenience, low-carb diets provide the fastest results. The pounds will shed within weeks and will continue to shed. In addition to a healthy diet, it's also important to add an exercise regimen. The regimen need not be extreme. In fact, if you haven't exercised in years, I recommend you start with slow walks and progress.

Glp-1 pathway (simplified)

Glp-1 receptor is expressed in β-cells of the pancreas. After the ingested nutrient is digested and reaches the intestines, specialized cells secrete the incretin Glp-1 (glucacon like peptide-1). Glp-1 binds and activates the Glp-1 receptor (a G-protein coupled receptor). The resulting activation results in a signalling cascade that promotes insulin synthesis and secretion from the pancreatic β-cells.

The G protein (attached to the G-protein coupled receptor)  is a heterotrimer composed of α,β, and γ subunits. The alpha subunit detaches and reattaches like a switch based on its interaction with GTP and GDP respectively.

Canadians applying to medical school in the United States

Dear applicants,

I highly encourage Canadian medical school applicants to apply to the States. As you are very much aware, medical school admission is a competitive process. There are currently only 17 medical schools in Canada. You can increase your chances of success by applying to the 60+ medical schools in the United States that accept international students.

I encourage you to visit AAMC sign up link and register today. The best advice I can give is to apply early as the submission process opens early June 2016. Unlike Canadian  schools, the US medical schools follow a rolling admissions process. This means that applicants are admitted on a first come first serve basis with earlier applicants having the greatest opportunity for success.

Advice number 2: apply broadly! The application process is very unpredictable and the best way to give yourself a successful application cycle is to apply to a lot of schools. Aim for 25-30 schools. Some applicants apply to as many as 40 schools. The caveat is that this will be relatively expensive (~$2000 USD). However, consider that most applicants spend thousands on preparing for the MCAT (not to mention their undergraduate degree) and skimp out on when it really counts.

Last advice: Follow through on your dream. If you are passionate about becoming a physician and you have spent countless hours studying and volunteering, you should definitely follow through on making your dreams a reality. A lot of people give up when they are unsuccessful in their first attempts. If you truly want to become a doctor, you will work to make it happen and be willing to travel.

Side note: Register for an SDN (student doctor network) forums account. There is a treasure load of information that will help you throughout your application process.

Also, feel free to message me as I have been successful in applying to US medical schools.

Black toilet mold and diabetes

Is there a connection between diabetes and black mold in toilets? Are you a diabetic who has noticed the appearance of black molds inside your toilet? What does this mean?

These are interesting questions that many diabetics have asked. Diabetes, a disease characterized by improper blood sugar control, has the hallmark symptom of excess urination. In fact, the word 'diabetes' stems from the greek word 'diabainein' meaning 'to pass through' in reference to the passing of sugar through the urine. What does this have to do with black moldy toilets?

The simple explanation is that excess sugar in the urine provides fuel for fungus/mold which results in the growth we observe in the toilets. However, an interesting proposal is if there is a link between fungus and diabetes. Sure enough, there is a large body of evidence that points to a strong connection between fungus and diabetes. I highly recommend you look into the book "The Fungus Link to Diabetes" by Doug A. Kaufmann.

Gout, which is caused by excess uric acid in the blood has a connection to fungus as well as diabetes. Oral thrush in diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are too high leading to an outbreak of yeast growth in the mouth and tongue. Interestingly, a lot of the anti-diabetes drugs we take also have anti-fungal properties. Is it possible that their effect on blood sugar is in part due to their ability to combat fungus?

If pre-diabetes and diabetes has such a strong link to fungus, what is the solution? First, I recommend you consult your doctor before making any major changes to your medication and diet. The great news is that fighting fungus is simple. The goal is to starve the fungus without starving the human. Fungi thrive in sugar rich environments. It's important to eliminate sugar from the diet. It's also important to moderate carbohydrate intake and make sure blood sugar levels remain in a healthy range.

I don't want to overwhelm anyone with details but the more passionate you become about eliminating fungus and seeking better health, the more energy you can invest in learning about the anti-fungus lifestyle. I hope your journey to better health also leads to mold-free and cleaner toilet.

Are you tired of colleges / universities?

Are you tired of the modern education being offered at colleges and universities? Students are paying more than ever for higher education. At the same time, job prospects after post secondary education are difficult to secure. In fact, students are expected to have high levels of experience coming out of school for entry level positions.

It's time you realize what colleges and universities don't want you to know. First realization: the internet has made knowledge so accessible and has brought the worlds libraries to your finger tips. Colleges were relevant in the past because books and the information contained in these books were only accessible at these institutions. Second realization: there is a pressure to attend college because that's what good students do after completing high school. This idea is strong in our culture and results in a negative image being associated with people who forego college to pursue other passions. Lastly, colleges and universities stifle creativity. They box students into majors and degrees instead of challenging students to solve problems and promoting innovation.

My advice is to think twice before enrolling in college. Don't go to college because it's what everyone expects you to do. Don't go to college because you believe it's a sure fire path to finding a career you enjoy. Don't go to college for the wrong reasons. What, you may ask, are the right reasons for going to college? That is an excellent question to ask yourself.

Can't afford medical school in the United States?

I want to connect with people who are struggling to pay for medical school and who don't qualify for federal loans. For e.g. international students who have been accepted into U.S. medical schools but are unable to attend because they don't qualify for federal loans.

Is there a solution? If you come from a financially disadvantaged family, the simple answer is no. Of course, there is an option of getting loans from private banks. The caveat is that you will require a U.S. based cosigner.

I would like to hear from others who have experience overcoming this situation and what solutions they recommend.
